Ubisoft announced today that the highly anticipated Prince of Persia remake will be moving to its Montreal studio. This follows months of delays and no updates. Ubisoft also confirmed that it is no longer targeting a release during the 2023 fiscal year. This period runs from March 31st, 2023 in Canada. Since 2020, the game was in development at Ubisoft’s India-based Mumbai studios and Pune studios.

Ubisoft Montreal will now lead the development of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake, which is the birthplace of the epic Sands of Time Trilogy,” Ubisoft’s initial announcement via Twitter states. This is a significant step. The team, building upon the Ubisoft Pune work and Ubisoft Mumbai’s success, will now take the time to reassess the scope of the game in order to provide the best experience possible for the remake of an all-time great classic.

Apart from helping with games such as Just Dance or Steep remake is the first major title Ubisoft Mumbai & Pune studios have been involved in development. Ubisoft did not elaborate on the reasons it had to switch studios.

Ubisoft Pune spokesperson Antoine Leduc Labelle stated that they are proud of Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune’s work and Ubisoft Montreal will also benefit from their lessons as the new team will work hard to produce a great remake. “We are not targeting an FY23 release as such. As the development continues, players will be kept informed about the progress of the project.”

The Sands of Time remake is not a reskin of the original game. It’s a remastering of it that uses Ubisoft’s AnvilNext engine. It was originally scheduled for release in January 2021 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It’s not clear if optimization will be done for the Series X / X or PS5.

Pandemic-related problems caused Ubisoft The Sands of Time to push its release date back for a few months before it made the decision to delay the game’s launch indefinitely. Ubisoft released its last update about the game in October last year. This just reassured the fans that the developers were still working on it.

Updated May 7, 2012, 12:42 ET: This post has been updated with the information that Ubisoft delayed The Sands of Time’s remake until after 2023. A statement by Ubisoft has been also added.
